Your Complete Guide to Eye Health - Symptoms, Treatments & Prevention

Eye Care Basics

Why Regular Eye Care Is Non-Negotiable

Most people visit an eye doctor only when something goes wrong. But many of the most dangerous eye conditions - glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration - progress silently, with no pain or visible symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. By the time a patient notices blurred vision or vision loss, the disease may already be at an advanced stage.

Routine eye examinations allow our doctors to detect these conditions early, when treatment is most effective and vision loss can still be prevented or minimised. In India, preventable blindness remains a major public health burden, and the Thiruvalla region is no exception. This makes access to a trusted, comprehensive eye hospital locally - like Amita Eye Care - critical.

How often should you get your eyes checked?

  • Children (0-18 years): Every 6-12 months, or sooner if squinting, headaches, or poor school performance is noticed.
  • Adults (18-40 years): Every 2 years if no symptoms; annually if wearing glasses or contact lenses.
  • Adults over 40: Annually — this is when glaucoma, presbyopia, and early cataract risk increases significantly.
  • Diabetics and hypertensive patients: Every 6 months regardless of age - your eyes reflect your systemic health.

Conditions We Treat

Common Eye Conditions Treated at Our Thiruvalla Hospital

Our ophthalmology team at Amita Eye Care is trained to diagnose and manage a comprehensive range of eye conditions. Here is an overview of the most frequently encountered conditions in our practice:

Cataract

Clouding of the natural lens, causing blurred, hazy vision. The most common cause of treatable blindness in Kerala.

Glaucoma

Increased intraocular pressure damaging the optic nerve. Often symptomless until advanced - regular screening is vital.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Damage to the retinal blood vessels caused by diabetes. A leading cause of blindness in working-age adults in India.

Refractive Errors

Myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism - corrected with glasses, lenses, or LASIK.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Chronic insufficient or poor-quality tear production, causing irritation, redness and blurry vision - highly prevalent in digital screen users.

Squint (Strabismus)

Misalignment of the eyes, common in children. Early treatment prevents amblyopia (lazy eye) and preserves binocular vision.

Corneal Infections

Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections that can rapidly threaten vision if untreated. Prompt examination is essential.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Deterioration of the macula, the central part of the retina, affecting central vision in adults over 50.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract - Understanding India's Most Common Eye Surgery

A cataract is the gradual clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens, situated just behind the pupil. While the condition develops slowly over years, it eventually interferes with everyday activities like reading, driving, or recognising faces. Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness in India, yet they are entirely treatable with a simple, safe surgery.

Symptoms to watch for

Cataracts don't usually cause pain, which is why many patients overlook them in early stages. Common signs include blurred or cloudy vision that does not improve with glasses, increased sensitivity to glare especially at night, seeing halos around lights, faded or yellowed colours, and frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription.

Phacoemulsification - modern cataract surgery

At Amita Eye Care, Thiruvalla, we perform phacoemulsification - a minimally invasive technique that uses ultrasound energy to break up the clouded lens, which is then gently removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes per eye, requires no stitches or injections, and patients usually return to normal activities within a few days.

We offer a range of premium IOL options including monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses - allowing us to tailor the surgery to your lifestyle, whether you wish to be free of glasses entirely or prefer a specific focal distance.

Glaucoma - The Silent Thief of Sight

Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve without any pain or early warning signs. By the time peripheral vision loss becomes noticeable, significant nerve damage has usually already occurred. This is why glaucoma screening - particularly for those above 40, or with a family history of the condition - is so critically important.

Who is at risk?

Risk factors include age above 40, a family history of glaucoma, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), diabetes, high myopia, and past eye injuries. Patients of South Asian descent, including those from Kerala, have a higher genetic predisposition to certain types of glaucoma, making regular screening especially important for residents of Thiruvalla and surrounding areas.

Our glaucoma management approach

Our clinic is equipped with Non-Contact Tonometry (NCT) for painless intraocular pressure measurement, as well as advanced Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for detailed optic nerve imaging. Treatment begins with medicated eye drops in most cases, progressing to laser therapy (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) or surgical intervention if pressure remains uncontrolled. Once started, glaucoma treatment must be continued lifelong, but the vast majority of patients maintain their vision for decades with proper adherence.

Retinal Health

Diabetic Retinopathy & Retinal Services

Kerala has one of the highest prevalence rates of diabetes in India, which directly translates into a significant burden of diabetic eye disease. Diabetic retinopathy affects the tiny blood vessels of the retina - the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. Over time, these vessels can leak, bleed, or grow abnormally, causing progressive and potentially irreversible vision loss.

The critical point to understand is that diabetic retinopathy is largely asymptomatic in its early stages. A patient may have significant retinal changes and yet feel no difference in their day-to-day vision. By the time blurring or floating spots appear, the condition is already advanced. Annual fundus examination for every person living with diabetes is therefore not optional - it is essential.

Retinal services at Amita Eye Care, Thiruvalla

  • Fundus Photography & OCT Angiography - detailed imaging of the retinal blood vessels and layers without invasive dye injection.
  • Laser Photocoagulation - precisely targeted laser treatment to seal leaking blood vessels and reduce swelling in the retina.
  • Intravitreal Injections - anti-VEGF therapy delivered directly into the eye to halt abnormal vessel growth and reduce macular oedema.
  • Vitreoretinal Surgery - advanced surgical management of retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, and complex diabetic complications.

Paediatric Ophthalmology

Children's Eye Health - Don't Wait Until School Age

The visual system develops rapidly in the first decade of life, and many conditions - if left untreated — can lead to permanent visual impairment even when the underlying eye structure is perfectly healthy. This is known as amblyopia, or "lazy eye," and it is far more common than most parents realise.

Young children rarely complain about poor vision because they assume their experience is normal. Common warning signs that your child may have a vision problem include sitting very close to the television, squinting or tilting their head, rubbing their eyes frequently, avoiding reading or near-work, or consistently covering one eye. Poor academic performance is also frequently linked to undetected vision problems.

Our paediatric services include

Comprehensive paediatric eye examinations using child-friendly techniques, cycloplegic refraction, squint (strabismus) assessment and surgery, management of blocked tear ducts (naso-lacrimal duct obstruction) in infants, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening for premature babies, and specialised contact lens fitting for older children.

Preventive Care

10 Daily Habits That Protect Your Vision

Great eye health doesn't happen only in the clinic - it is built day by day through the choices you make. Here are ten evidence-based habits our doctors recommend to every patient:

  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses outdoors. Prolonged UV exposure is a key risk factor for cataract formation and macular degeneration. Choose lenses labelled UV400 or higher.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule for screens. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This dramatically reduces digital eye strain and dry eye symptoms.
  • Eat a vision-protective diet. Leafy greens (spinach, drumstick leaves), fish rich in omega-3s, carrots, eggs, and citrus fruits contain lutein, zeaxanthin, and antioxidants that protect retinal health.
  • Control your blood sugar and blood pressure. Systemic diseases are among the leading causes of serious eye conditions in Kerala. Keeping these under control directly protects your retina and optic nerve.
  • Never smoke. Smoking doubles the risk of age-related macular degeneration and significantly increases cataract formation and optic nerve damage.
  • Stay well-hydrated. Adequate water intake supports healthy tear film production and reduces dry eye symptoms, particularly in Kerala's summer months.
  • Get 7-8 hours of quality sleep. Your eyes perform critical repair processes during sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to increased eye pressure and reduced tear production.
  • Handle contact lenses hygienically. Always wash hands before insertion, never sleep in lenses unless medically prescribed, and replace lenses on schedule to reduce infection risk.
  • Ensure optimal lighting at home and work. Reading or working in dim light does not damage the eyes permanently but causes significant fatigue. Good ambient lighting reduces strain.
  • Schedule annual eye exams, even if your vision feels fine. Many serious conditions are detected only on examination. This is the single most impactful habit on this list.
